E-Invoicing in Belgium: Current Status and Outlook
11/09/2025 - Published by : FiduPress < Back
The deadline of 1 January 2026, when all Belgian VAT-liable companies must be able to send and receive electronic invoices via Peppol, is approaching rapidly. Where does Belgium stand today in this transition?
A Growing Number of Companies Connected to Peppol
The available data shows a clear acceleration:
- 1 January 2025: around 100,000 companies connected
- 1 April 2025: officially 237,016 companies registered
- September 2025: estimates point to 340,000 companies already connected
In just nine months, the number of active companies on Peppol has more than tripled. The momentum is undeniable, but it must accelerate further to reach the official target of 600,000 companies by January 2026.
At the current pace, projections suggest that about 450,000 companies will be ready by the deadline.
SMEs: Between Opportunities and Concerns
Findings from the third 2025 quarterly survey by ComptaPerspectives, conducted among 300 SMEs, highlight this mixed picture:
- 34% of entrepreneurs now feel (very) well informed about e-invoicing (compared to 21% in Q1).
- 36% see time savings as the main benefit (a growing trend).
- 34% fear a total dependence on the system (compared to 24% in Q1).
These results show both a growing awareness of the benefits and persistent concerns. The role of accountants and tax advisors therefore remains crucial in guiding businesses through this transition.
Key Takeaways for Your Business
- E-invoicing will become mandatory as of 2026.
- Adoption is rising quickly, but the current pace is still below target.
- SMEs are increasingly aware of the benefits, but legitimate concerns remain.
A Decisive Autumn
The adoption of Peppol in Belgium is gaining strong momentum, and the country already has a substantial base of connected companies. However, the share of invoices actually exchanged in a structured format is still too low to ensure a smooth transition.
Autumn 2025 will be decisive: every business should join the national movement now and prepare in advance, to avoid a last-minute rush at the end of 2025.
Your accountant is your key point of contact for implementing e-invoicing: already equipped, they can guide you towards the solutions best suited to your business.
